CISB students held several Taking Actions assemblies and activities in different grades last week in support of our Mindfulness Week, and we hope to use this week's CISBe In The know to help draw the attention of students and parents to mental health issue. This is because these issues not only directly affect students’ social and academic performance at school, it can be a source of misunderstanding and tension in relationships between parents and students.
上周是我校Mindfulness week,各年级学生们举行了Taking Action的活动。我们希望这期内容让更多学生和家长关注学生心理健康发展问题。因为这个问题不仅会影响到学生的在校表现,造成家长和学生之间的矛盾,同时也将导致更多的社会问题。
Q1: 你在学校中的工作是什么?
Monica: It is the responsibility of the Counsellor to ensure that each student receives the help and support they need to be a successful member of the school and wider community by addressing their social, emotional and wellbeing. This may consist of working with individual students, small group counselling, and/or classroom sessions.
作为学生们的的辅导老师,我的工作主要是通过多种形式,如和学生一起合作、小组式辅导或者班级授课等,为每一位学生在他们社交、情感和健康方面提供帮助和支持,从而更好的适应和面对学校和生活中的困难。

Q2: 在学校中为什么要有辅导老师?
Inge: Students will only be academically successful if they are emotionally feeling well. I am providing guidance and support to children who need it to make sure they reach their full potential. A child can only learn when they are in a social and emotional safe learning environment. If, for whatever reason, they don’t feel safe, they won’t be able to learn. Just as in any other subjects, children need guidance in how to deal with certain emotions or social situations. With this guidance they can become confident and well-rounded citizens.
学生在一个情绪良好稳定的情况下,他们才能在学术上取得更好的成绩。作为学生辅导老师,我主要给需要帮助的孩子们提供帮助,并确保他们充分发挥自己的潜能。孩子只有在社会和情感都感到安全的环境下学习。反之,不管出于什么原因,如果他们感到不安全,就无法进行知识的学习。这就像学习其他学科一样,孩子们需要老师帮助和引导他们学会如何处理某些情绪或遇到的特殊情况。有了老师的引导,我相信学生们可以全面发展和变得更加自信。
Monica: It is necessary to have a school counsellor at CISB as the role provides support for students going through adolescence, dealing with peer pressure, and the pressure of an international environment, and academics.
在CISB, 学生辅导老师的角色十分重要。尤其是对于处于青春期阶段的青少年,帮助他们处理来自学业、同龄人之间和校内外的压力。
Q3:你是如何帮助学生/家长/其他老师的?
Monica: The primary role is to have students feel safe in the school environment and feel supported socially and emotionally. I work with students addressing individual needs, developing goals and provide student /teacher strategies to best support them. By having dialogue with parents and having meetings (where appropriate) provides transparency and ensures we are working towards the same goal.
我的主要角色是让学生们在校是感到安全的,可靠的,并且在社交上和情感上给与他们帮助与支持。通常根据每个学生不同的需求,我会和他们一起制定目标,然后给学生和老师们提供最好的建议。我也会和学生家长进行透明的公开的沟通对话,为的是确保家长、学生和学校三方向同一个方向努力,共同完成目标。
Inge: Students can be referred to me by their class teacher, an administrator or by their parents. They can also come to my office during recess or ask their teacher if they can come to see me. I have weekly individual counselling sessions with children who need consistent support. If there is a problem occurring with a group of students, I may have group counselling sessions. I also do in class observations, to get a better understanding of what kind of behaviors the children display in their classroom.
I work closely together with class teachers to share strategies they can use in class to support children. I help teachers plan classroom and group activities and support plans that meet the student’s needs.
I have regular meetings with the parents of the students that I am working with and help parents to find external support in the community when needed. Parents are always welcome to contact me if they have concerns about their child or questions about parenting.
学生可以通过班主任老师、教学管理人员或他们的父母的引荐来见我。他们可以在课间或得到老师的准许后来办公室找我。每周我会为固定需要辅导的学生提供帮助。有时候,我也会进行小组辅导。我还会去学生的班级里进行课堂观察,以便更好的了解孩子们在课堂中所表现的行为。
平时,我也会和班主任老师分享一些能在课堂上用的方法,比如设计教室的内容样式和在课堂上的小组活动。

Q4: 学生们在不同成长阶段都需要什么?
Inge: Young children are exploring their environment by using their senses. They move around, touch objects, and have a short attention span. Therefore, it is important that we create an environment where they can learn in an active manner and wherein we limit the amount of seated instruction time. At this age children begin to develop autonomy and they will learn how to do things independently when they are being given opportunities to do so. For caregivers it is important to keep in mind that we encourage children to be independent and only assist them when necessary in daily self-care tasks, such as putting their coat on. Children in PreK are impulsive and naturally more self-centered and only see their viewpoint. They require modelling and guidance from adults to share with their peers and to help them understand someone else’s viewpoint. When children are getting older, they become aware that others have their own thoughts, feeling and beliefs. They can use other people’s perspective when they are solving problems and they become better at controlling their impulses.
孩子们是通过他们的感官来探索身边的环境。他们四处走动,触摸物体,有着较短的注意力。所以,创造一个积极的学习环境和控制桌前学习的时间是非常重要的。这个年龄的孩子逐渐发展自主性和学习如何独立完成任务的能力。对于他们的看护人照料者说,我们需要多鼓励孩子独立。当他们只有在需要我们帮助的时候,去帮助他们完成任务,比如给他们穿上外套。PreK幼儿园的孩子是敏感的、冲动的,会以自我为中心,只关注自己的想法。作为他们身边的成年人,我们需要引导孩子们多与同龄人或更多的人分享,帮助他们理解别人的观点。随着孩子们的成长,他们慢慢会意识到别人也有自己的想法、感受和信仰。当他们解决问题的时候,他们就会采用别人的观点去看待问题,同时也会更善于控制自己冲动的行为。
Monica: Students needs vary greatly, they include assimilation to a new country, a new school, friendship issues, family issues, academic and or behavioral issues, puberty, body image, health and mental health issues including anxiety, depression, stress.
学生们会有很多不同的需求。这包括对新国家、新学校的了解、与朋友和家庭之间的问题、在学业上或举止行为上的问题。在青春期会遇到的困惑,像自我形象、健康和心理健康问题(焦虑、抑郁、压力)等。
Q5: 当你同学生/家长沟通时有遇到过什么挑战么?
Monica: Time is always challenging, there is never enough time in the day!! Working with so many cultures you are constantly learning from families about their values and needs. Parental expectations often effect student’s wellbeing, when we see the pressure those expectations cause it is an balancing act to encourage students to do their best and maintaining their mental health and wellbeing.
我认为最富有挑战的是对于时间的掌控,在工作当中,时间总是过得很快!学生来自不同的家庭背景文化,我需要了解到他们的价值观和需求。同时,家长们的期望通常会影响学生的幸福感。当我们看到这些期望带来的压力时,鼓励学生尽力而为,学会平衡和处理压力的能力,保持他们的心理健康和幸福感。
Inge: The main challenge I face is the language barrier. Especially when it comes down to expressing your emotions, it can be a challenge to do this in a language that is not your mother tongue. Some children struggle to express their thoughts and/or emotions in English and that makes it difficult for me to work directly with them and/or their parents. In situations like these, I use an interpreter who can help me to convey a message.
在工作中,我面临的主要挑战是语言障碍。尤其是当你在表达情绪时,用你非母语的语言来表达是有困难的。有些孩子很难用英语表达他们的想法或情感,这也让我很难直接与他们或他们的父母沟通交流。在这种情况下,我会找相对应的老师帮我翻译,相互沟通交流。
Q6: 校内孩子们常见的问题都有哪些?
如何来预防?
Inge: Children of all ages, have at times problems with their peers. Some children struggle to be an assertive communicator and they might find it difficult to advocate for themselves and to use strategies that will help to resolve conflicts. Children can learn to become assertive communicators and better problem solvers through direct teaching, modelling, practice during role plays and eventually implementing these skills in real life situations.
所有年龄段的孩子,都会和同龄人产生一些矛盾和问题等。有些孩子在沟通上不自信和害怕沟通,他们会很难表达自己的观点或者选择合适的方法去解决问题。所以,我们会通过角色扮演,让孩子模仿和练习。最终,将这些所学的运用到实际生活中,他们才能更好的表达和解决的问题。
